As part of the final semester in our documentary program at Elon University in 2014, we were tasked with producing a short-form story. Sergio had an interest in transgender issues because one of his relatives has been transgender since she was seven years old. When Sergio came across the local news about Blake being crowned the homecoming king, we knew this the story to dig deep into…

At the time, House Bill 2 was currently in discussion, which targeted the trans community in the first line of the bill:

An act to provide for single-sex multiple occupancy bathroom and changing facilities in schools and public agencies and to create statewide consistency in regulation of employment and public accommodations.

HB2, GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF NORTH CAROLINA

We reached out to Blake and he was more than willing to let us speak with him on camera and learn about his life story. Blake opened his heart to us, sharing emotional chapters from his childhood that shaped who he became. He was one of the most resilient, positive and creative young men we met. Blake has an unbreakable spirit and goes out of his way to help others in need, and stand up for what is right. We hope that after watching the film you have a deeper understanding of the trans community and show love to all humans just like Blake.
